UK Foreign Office Amends Travel Advise to Indonesia...January 5th 2005

UK FOREIGN OFFICE AMENDS TRAVEL ADVICE FOR INDONESIA

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office revised its travel advice for Indonesia on 31 December and is no longer advising against all but essential travel. However there remains a high threat from terrorism in Indonesia.

The summary now reads:

We advise against all travel to Aceh, except for those involved in humanitarian operations. The coastal areas of the province of Aceh and some parts of North Sumatra were hit by a large tsunami on 26 December, resulting in widespread casualties and damage. For the latest update please refer to the Natural Disasters section of this Travel Advice.

We advise against travel to some parts of Maluku, especially Ambon, and some parts of Sulawesi, which are experiencing civilian unrest.

Penalties for illegal drug importation and use are severe and can include the death penalty.

We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.
