Contribution to the Aceh Tsunami Disaster Relief Effort..December 31st 2004
Following the disastrous tsunami that impacted many parts of South East Asia on December 26th, we would first of all like to express our condolences to all those who have lost families, relatives or friends in this disaster. Fortunately Bali was untouched by this and not even a tremor was felt. Our North Sumatran neighbours have experienced the worst casualties with to date over 40,000 dead and many more left destitute with no homes,food or water.
Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel & Suites along with the Bali Hotels Association is supporting those survivors in Aceh through the “BHA Tsunami Relief Effort” – the details of which are below. We hope that you too will try and assist those who have been affected by the worlds biggest ever humanitarian disaster by making a contribution.
Following an earthquake of Northern Sumatra on December 26th 2004, the result was a massive tsunami which caused devastation to a large area of South East Asia including, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
Although Bali felt nothing and was not affected by the tsunami, the Bali Hotels Association immediately sprung into gear to assist those affected in Indonesia affected by the tsunami. North Sumatra (Aceh) was the worst region affected by the tsunami and as of the time of posting (December 30th) over 40,000 people are reported to have been killed and this number is rapidly rising as aid reaches the more remote regions.
Bali Hotels Association has chosen to work with "Indonesia Peduli" which consists of a conglomeration of Exxon Mobil, Unilever, General Electric, British American Tobacco and Asia Pulp and Paper. This alliance has the resources to ensure that all relief materials are dispatched directly into Aceh and the NGO's operating in Aceh have been vetted by this alliance.
Bali Hotels Association member hotels have already been donating linen etc which is being sent by cargo to Jakarta with compliments of Santa Fe Removals, from where it will be dispatched by "Indonesia Peduli".
Association members have been raising cash support through staff donations, guest donations and company donations.
All initial monies received by BHA will be used to purchase food items for the survivors in Aceh. Food items are being purchased at "cost" price through a special agreement with Indofoods. A full account of receipts and expenses will be posted on this site to ensure transparency.
