Earthquake in Sumatra-Indonesia-December 26, 2004

Bali - 5pm - December 27th 2004 - An earthquake struck the indonesian island of Sumatera, around 8am, local time, on December 26th, the epicentre of which was located off Northern Aceh, Indonesia.

The Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysical Agency (BMG) placed the epicenter of the quake at a depth of 20 kilometers below sea level at a position 149 kilometers off the southern coast of Aceh, North Sumatra. While thousands of deaths in Western Indonesia resulted from the massive destruction of buildings in Aceh in North Sumatra and from the effects of tidal waves along Sumatra's northern and western coasts, other areas of Indonesia remained largely untouched by the catastrophe.

Recognised as the worlds biggest earthquake in 40 years measuring 8.9 on the richter scale causing waves as high as ten meters to strike tourist resorts and destinations in Thailand, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Bali was fortunate not to experience any repercussions or tidal waves or aftershocks following the earthquake. However it is reported that over 4,300 people have been killed on the Indonesian Island of Sumatra. The hotel expresses its shock at this event which has taken the lives of over 20,000 people in the South East Asian region and th Bay of Bengal of which the numbers are anticipated to still rise.

Bali completely escaped any of the catastrophic destruction resulting from the massive 8.9 Richter earthquake that struck just off the coast of northwest Sumatra on Sunday, December 26, 2005. Bali – located some 2,500 kilometers away from the earthquake and well-shielded by numerous large intervening land masses, did not feel the earthquake or experience any of the deadly waves it generated.
